Patio Refresh on a Budget: Under $800

Our 150-square-foot patio started as a functional but uninspired area—a bench, two chairs, and a tired-looking rug that quickly collected dust. After the first few months, it became a forgotten corner of our home. I knew it was time for a complete refresh to turn it into a space we’d love and use regularly.

The New Vision: Dining and Gardening

This time around, I wanted the patio to serve multiple purposes: a cozy dining area and a small garden. My partner, who I call Michelin Mike, loves to cook, and I’m all about designing tablescapes. So instead of the usual loveseat and chairs, I opted for a dining setup where we could host. I also wanted to explore my new hobby—gardening—so I decided to add a garden bed to grow our own herbs and vegetables. There's nothing quite like cooking with fresh ingredients straight from your own garden; it really does make a difference in flavor!

Also huge shout out to @lokatlasers on IG for making me the cutest garden herbs labels & drink tag!

Designing Within HOA Rules

Living in an HOA neighborhood has its challenges—especially when it comes to design restrictions. I couldn’t repaint the exterior, but I found creative ways to soften the look. A stylish outdoor rug anchors the space, while hanging plants and wall decor draw attention away from the color I wasn’t fond of. To add a calming ambiance, I also brought in a small fountain, perfect for creating a serene atmosphere whether we’re dining or working outside.

Budget Breakdown and Favorite Finds

Sticking to a budget was key for this project. The most significant investment was the dining table. I knew I wanted a quality piece that could comfortably seat guests, withstand the elements, and easy to clean so I was happy to splurge a bit there. Please note that the prices listed below aren’t exactly what I paid. I took advantage of Amazon Prime Day deals, found my chairs on Facebook Marketplace for $110 for all four, and already had most of my planters. I’ve also included foldable chairs from Amazon that I’ve been eyeing because they can be easily stored during bad weather. Here are the products:

The Patio Today: A Work in Progress

The patio isn’t fully finished, but it’s already become my favorite spot in our home. Whether I’m enjoying morning coffee, checking on the garden, or working in the fresh air, the space feels both functional and inviting. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of reimagining and a thoughtful plan to turn a neglected area into the most-loved space in your home!

Kathleen
